This cave was only discovered in 1994 by Jean-Marie Chauvet and its one of the most famous prehistoric rock art sites in the world. The cave art has been dated between 30,000 and 33,000 years ago and the cave has since been granted the prestigious World Heritage status by UNESCO in 2014.

It was in the Netherlands during the late Renaissance period that oil painting techniques were developed and this spread throughout Europe as it was found that oil paint was more flexible which gave a range of effects, therefore, the artist could use more expressive flair in their paintings. During the Renaissance in Italy, the artists preferred tempera paint and examples of these paintings from the First Century AD can be seen today.

As ever progression into the 19th Century and the invention of photography affected how we view paintings and the world of history paintings, portraits, landscapes, still life and genre paintings changed forever. During the early 20th Century we began to see Impressionism, Fauvism, Expressionism and Cubism creep into the art galleries and it changed the way we looked at art.
